Call one of the convenient locations in Beverly Hills and Rancho Cucamonga, CA, to find out how spinal cord stimulation can provide you with long-term pain relief.
What is a spinal cord stimulator?
A spinal cord stimulator is implanted just under your skin, where it delivers electrical pulses to the nerves in the areas where you experience pain. These pulses mask the signals from your brain that cause you to feel pain. You control how often you turn on the stimulator and the intensity of the pulses.
What conditions can a spinal cord stimulator address?
Spinal cord stimulators have been used for pain management for decades to address pain issues associated with:
- Failed back surgery
- Neuropathy
- Complex regional pain syndrome
- Cervical and lumbar radiculitis
If you have chronic back and neck pain that doesn’t respond to other therapies, you may also find relief with a spinal cord stimulator.
Who is a candidate for a spinal cord stimulator?
If your back or neck pain originates in the nerves, a spinal cord stimulator may be the solution. However, before implanting a spinal cord stimulator, Dr. Nassiri first ensures that you meet the following criteria:
- You can’t have or wouldn’t benefit from additional surgery
- Your pain is caused by a correctable, nerve-generated problem
- You have tried noninvasive therapies without results
- You have no medical conditions that would make implantation contraindicated
Before being cleared for implantation, you’ll undergo a spinal cord stimulator trial to see if it’s right for you.
What is a spinal cord stimulator trial?
Prior to implantation, Dr. Nassiri will have you undergo a trial to see if the spinal cord stimulator does indeed help with the type, severity, and location of your pain.
During the trial, Dr. Nassiri numbs your lower back with a local anesthetic and inserts a hollow needle through the skin into the space between the bone and the spinal cord. He then inserts a lead and positions it precisely over the relevant nerves. These wires attach to an external spinal stimulator.
You wear the external stimulator for 4-7 days to feel how it manages your pain; you have the power to turn it on and off and to control its intensity.
